Fall dressing has a way of becoming predictable. The same dark colors, structured jackets, boots and knitwear return every year. While I love a wardrobe built around good basics, I also think there's room for something a little less expected.

A printed dress when everyone else is wearing black. A ruffled top with relaxed denim. Satin trousers worn with something simple rather than saved for a formal occasion.

For this part of The October Edit, I wanted to look at pieces that bring personality to everyday dressing without making the wardrobe feel complicated.

Denim with a little more ease

Wide-leg denim is one of those silhouettes that can work with almost anything. A relaxed shape creates a contrast with more tailored pieces, particularly when paired with a fitted top or structured jacket.

The white top, reconsidered

A white top is one of the easiest pieces to wear, but it doesn't always have to be simple. The ruffled detail adds a more distinctive element to a familiar wardrobe staple. I'd wear it with relaxed denim or black trousers and keep the accessories minimal.

Sometimes one interesting detail is enough.

The everyday shirt

I like having a button-down shirt in the wardrobe because it gives you several ways to wear the same piece. Wear it tucked into tailored trousers, styled with denim or more casually as a layer.

Keeping it simple

Not every piece needs to be a statement. A simple long-sleeve top helps balance the more expressive pieces. Pair it with wide-leg denim, tailored trousers or satin pants and let the rest of the outfit take the lead.

Satin for the everyday wardrobe

I don't think satin needs to be reserved for evening. Fluid palazzo pants offer a different way to introduce a dressier fabric into the everyday wardrobe. Wear them with an uncomplicated top and let the contrast become the interesting part of the outfit.

Two dresses, two different moods

A dress is one of the simplest ways to make getting dressed feel easy, particularly when the silhouette doesn't require much additional styling. A wrap dress offers an understated option, while a printed dress introduces something more expressive. I like having both approaches available.

Getting dressed should still be enjoyable

A wardrobe doesn't need to follow one strict formula. Tailoring can work with denim. Satin can be worn during the day. A printed dress doesn't need a special occasion.

The goal isn't to own more clothes. It's to have more ways to wear the ones you choose.
