In July the white shirt earns its keep only if it breathes: soft cotton, a relaxed cut, worn a little undone. Treat it as leverage, not a basic.
The white shirt is the most photographed garment in fashion and the most underestimated. By forty you stop treating it as basic and start treating it as leverage.
Wear it open over the dress you already own. Wear it half-tucked over linen trousers. Wear it alone, sleeves pushed up, as the entire top half of an outfit. It does all three without comment.
The maintenance is the trade. White shows everything, which is the point: it asks you to be a little more careful, and that care reads on you. Keep two. Retire them the moment they go gray.
In ninety degrees it is the only structured thing you can stand to wear. That is not a compromise. That is the shirt doing exactly what it was made for.
